ADD and ADHD both in adulthood and childhood have made it into medical headlines
over recent years.
There has been different types of studies on how nutrition, specifically omega
3 fatty acids and fish
oil supplements relate to the condition and symptoms of ADHD.
These types of studies include:
1. Research on how blood levels of omega 3 oils differ in children with and
without ADHD.
2. Randomised, double blind, placebo controlled trials where fish
oil is compared to placebo as a treatment for ADHD.
Generally these kinds of trials are considered a superior type of study as
they look at the effect or giving omega 3 fish oils to treat ADD or ADHD.
So what do the results show?
A randomised placebo controlled trials by the University of South Australia
and CSIRO looked at children age 7 to 12 years over a 30 weeks.
The study compared giving fish oil and evening primrose oil (omega 3 fatty
acids) with a high ratio of EPA to DHA (2 types of omega 3s).
It was found that 30 to 40 per cent of children over the 30 weeks showed an
improvement in ADHD symptoms.
The treatment group that was given placebo was swapped to omega 3 and showed
improvement, while the treatment group from 15-30 weeks continued to improve.
So this study supports the idea that omega 3 improves on the behaviour of children
with ADHD.
Adult and childhood ADHD is a popular topic of talk nowadays. And understandably
so.
Also, on a side note, omega 3 has helped many other conditions including depression.
This has been the case in people with diagnosed depression and on antidepressants,
as well as in population studies showing a lower incidence of depression related
to highest consumption of fish oils.
So keep an eye out on more research in this area of omega 3 fats.
More research means more information and more certainty of the relationships
between fish oils and problems such as ADD.
As mentioned, equally popular are natural
remedies such as omega 3 oils for conditions.
Perhaps omega 3 fatty acids and fish oils is one of those conditions where
nutrients do help ADHD to a significant degree.
More research is required to firmly establish this.
So take care and keep healthy.
Plus keep up to date on the latest in health - it's all fascinating news.
